Representatives of the main media groups signed another self-regulatory act – the joint agreement act on media coverage of cases of violence and cruelty
As part of the work of the working group on creating rules for the protection of children in the media, established under the auspices of the National Council, its participants elaborated a new joint agreement act No. 4 on media coverage of violence and cruelty. The industry representatives finally agreed and signed the text of the document in February 2020.
Traditionally, the media groups “1+1 Media”, “StarLightMedia”, “Ukraina”, National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine, as well as the civil society, scientists, psychologists, experts of the regulatory authority were engaged in the work on the document, which establishes the rules of media coverage of a particular topic. The regional media, as always, were represented by the National Media Association. The Board of this organization also considered the Act No. 4 at its meeting and decided to support it. It will be finally approved and signed at the general meeting of the Association to be held in the course of 2020.
The National Council welcomes the following step towards media self-regulation and encourages broadcasters to familiarize themselves with the Act as widely as possible and to use it in their work.
Currently, the working group is in the final stages of drafting an Act No. 5 on media coverage of cases of bullying (harassment). Topics that will proceed the work of the working group were discussed as well.
In previous years representatives of the working group developed and signed the following acts: on protection of a child who has been sexually abused while involved in media production, on media coverage of suicide, on media coverage of children’s participation in armed conflicts.
