Diversity and equal opportunities in TV and radio
For the first time we have combined our monitoring of diversity and equal opportunities in the TV and radio industries in a single report. This is the fourth year we have reported on the progress made by TV broadcasters and the third year for radio.
Ofcom has a duty to promote equality of opportunity in relation to employment in the broadcasting sector. We can ask broadcasters to provide information about their equal opportunities policies and the make-up of their workforce.
Our report for 2020 presents our key findings on the diversity of the broadcasters we regulate, including the main eight TV and radio organisations. Although outside the reporting period we have taken into account the huge impact of Covid-19 and the anti-racism protests, which will shape the broadcasters’ approach to increasing workforce diversity in the future. We also set out our expectations and priorities for broadcasters in the year ahead, and how Ofcom will support the industry to become more diverse and inclusive.
This year, we our report includes three interactive tools which provide more detailed information on:
- workforce data across the UK television and radio industries
- the workforce data of the eight main broadcasters; and
- qualitative information provided by the broadcasters on the work they have undertaken to increase diversity and inclusion in their organisations.
All data is for the period of April 2019 to March 2020.
